931. Indian Railways Gets ₹24,634 Crore Boost For Expansion In Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat & Chhattisgarh
- On October 7, 2025, The Union Cabinet granted approval for four multi-tracking railway projects worth ₹24,634 crore across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, adding about 894 km to the rail network.
- The projects, covering 18 districts will enhance connectivity for 3,633 villages with a combined population of around 8.58 million, benefiting two aspirational districts.
- Key routes include Bhusaval-Wardha (3rd & 4th line), Gondia-Dongargarh (4th line), Vadodara-Ratlam (3rd & 4th line) and Itarsi-Bhopal-Bina (4th line). The upgrades aim to boost freight capacity (especially for coal, containers, steel, food grains) and improve operational efficiency.
932. India’s Wind Exports Surge Elevenfold to USD 245 Million: Report
- On October 7, 2025, it was reported that India’s exports of wind turbines surging more than elevenfold over seven years—from USD 22 million in FY2018 to USD 245 million in FY2025, according to a new report by Rubix Data Sciences, a risk management and business intelligence firm.
- The growth has been underpinned by a robust domestic base of 14 manufacturers and 33 turbine models, positioning India as a significant exporter of clean technology solutions.
- In the solar segment, India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s third-largest market, with 123 GW of installed capacity as of August 2025.

933. India’s exports surge ahead despite global uncertainties
- On October 7, 2025, India’s total exports of goods and services have increased by 5.19 per cent to $346.10 billion in April-August 2025 from $329.03 billion in the same period of the 2024, despite the uncertainties in global markets triggered by the US tariff hikes.
- According to World Bank Data, the world’s export basket is growing at 2.5 per cent, whereas India’s export is growing at 7.1 per cent (2024) outpacing global growth, and indicating the progress of the country on the international front.
- India’s merchandise exports are on an upward trajectory in 2025 with a growth of 2.31 per cent in April-August 2025 to $183.74 billion as compared to $179.60 billion during the same period of 2024.
- The share of exports in India’s GDP has increased from 19.8 per cent in 2015 to 21.2 per cent in 2024, which also indicates the growing relevance of exports in the Indian economy India’s trade performance continued its trend of growth in the first five months of FY 2025–26, too, the statement observed.

934. Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve Added to UNESCO
- Set in the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers in the southern part of West Bengal, India, Sundarbans National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity and a UNESCO World Heritage Site added on 2001.
- Spanning approximately 10,000 square kilometres, this unique mangrove forest is not only a vital ecological zone but also a sanctuary for a myriad of species, making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
- One of the park’s most iconic residents is the Royal Bengal tiger. The Sundarbans is the largest remaining habitat for this elusive and endangered species. The dense mangrove forest provides the perfect camouflage for these solitary predators.

935. Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve Joins UNESCO Network
- Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve or Nanda Devi National Park is one of the most expansive bio reserves in India. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It is rich in flora & fauna, hence occupies a significant place on the map of India.
- About 1,000 plant species have been recorded, with many native and Himalayan-endemic species. Important animals include the snow leopard, the Himalayan black bear, brown bear, musk deer, and bharal/blue sheep.
- The Nanda Devi National Park, established in 1982, is situated around the peak of Nanda Devi (7816 m) in the state of Uttarakhand. The Park was established as Sanjay Gandhi National Park by Notification in 1982 but was later renamed Nanda Devi National Park.
- Around 15,000 people live in the reserve. The buffer zone has 45 villages, mainly Indo-Mongoloid (Bhotia) and Indo-Aryan communities.

936. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve Added to UNESCO
- Meghalaya's Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is a testament to the Northeast's biodiversity and ecological importance. With an area of approximately 47,000 hectares, UNESCO recognised and designated this biosphere reserve in 2009.
- Located in the Garo Hills, Nokrek Biosphere Reserve showcases diverse ecosystems, ranging from tropical and subtropical forests to grasslands and savannas. Named after the highest peak in the Garo Hills, Nokrek Peak, which stands at an elevation of around 1,412 meters above sea level, the reserve benefits from varied topography.
- The reserve is home to species such as Bombax ceiba (Cotton tree), Sterculia villosa (Hairy Sterculia), and Cassia fistula (Golden shower tree). About 22,000 people live in the reserve. Most practice shifting cultivation. They also collect honey, timber, and wax, and grow bananas, rice, cashews, and tea.

937. Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve Earns UNESCO Recognition
- Pachmarhi, located in the Satpura range in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the finest hill stations in central India. There are several species of rare plants in the forest of Pachmarhi. For his reason, back in May 2009, UNESCO added the forest of Pachmarhi to the list of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
- Pachmarhi is popularly known as Satpura ki Rani (Queen of Satpura) because this place is not only a part of the Satpura Biosphere Reserve, but also home to the Satpura National Park and Tiger Reserve, and Dhupgarh, the state’s highest point.
- It covers three protected sites: Bori Sanctuary, Satpura National Park, and Pachmarhi Sanctuary (Satpura Tiger Reserve). Forests make up about 63% of the area, with agriculture, water bodies, and settlements covering the rest.

938. Great Nicobar now 9th Indian reserve in Unesco world network
- On 31 May 2013, the Great Nicobar Biosphere island reserve, whose tropical wet evergreen forest hosts a wealth of animal species and medicinal plants, joins a global list of places named by UNESCO for promoting sustainable development based on local community efforts and science.
- The International Coordinating Council of Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) under the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture designated the 103,870 hectares Great Nicobar reserve as protected, in its meeting in Paris.
- The 6,381 inhabitants of the region derive a wide variety of biological resources from their environment such as medicinal plants and other non-timber forest products. The bioreserve is home to 1,800 animal species, including 200 species of meiofauna in the coastal zone.

939. Agasthiarmalai Reserve gets Unesco honour
- Home to four wildlife sanctuaries, one tiger reserve and more than 2,250 plant species, the Agasthiarmalai Biosphere Reserve (ABR), has been recently included in the Unesco's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
- ABR, which spans the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is among the seven reserves, such as Beaver Hills in Canada and Balmbangan in Indonesia, added in the list this year. Inclusion of the site in the network would be a recognition of the conservation measures taken up there as well as being a status symbol, say forest officials.
- Head of the forest department and principal chief conservator of forests, Tamil Nadu N Krishnakumar said the ABR was included at the international coordination council of the man and the biosphere programme of the Unesco that concluded in Peru on March 19, 2016.

940. Sikkim’s Khangchendzonga biosphere reserve added to UNESCO list
- India’s Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve, one of the highest ecosystems in the world, has been added to UNESCO's list of World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WNBR).
- According to a statement issued by the Union Environment Ministry, the International Coordinating Council (ICC) of Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme, UNESCO, had designated Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve for inclusion in the World Network of Biosphere Reserve in its 30th session, which was held from July 23-27, 2018 at Palembang, Indonesia.
- The Khangchendzonga reserve will be India's 11th internationally designated WNBR. In total, India has 18 biosphere reserves, among which 11 have been internationally designated WNBR.
